INTRODUCTION
Adequacy of
translation/interpretation is always very important, the role of
translator/interpreter as the main participant of the
translation/interpretation process should not be underestimated. International
community needs adequate and equivalent texts – that are results of the
translation/interpretation process
This term paper deals with
the problem of translating obscene vocabulary, the problem that is not much
studied yet but which is important especially at present time due to wide usage
of obscene vocabulary in modern literature.
At present
the mission of the translator is not only to provide good translation according
to standard requirements but also to reflect cultural and mental features of
the original language.
One of the
problems on the way to attain the adequacy of the translation is the
translation of obscene language which became widely used in modern literature
(less in mass media) for the last decades. Obscene language is characterized by
very idiomatical and very expressive functions. . Obscene language can be referred
to as slang variation. Modern literature is flooded with these slang words
used by both uneducated and educated people. Though there is no consensus on
the limit of this vocabulary usage or whether this vocabulary should be used
at all, the problem of adequacy of translation still exists and it is important
to study this problem, because not much attention had been paid to this problem
lately. The aim of this term paper is to study peculiarities of translation
of obscene vocabulary from the published modern fiction.
The following
objectives are set to achieve the aim of the work:
1)
to
identify the notion of slang
2)
to
identify the methods for translation of slang.
The study was
based upon the famous novel “Bridget Jones’s Diary” by Helen Fielding translated
into Russian by A. Moskvichova. ( Хелен Филдинг. Дневник
Бриджит Джонс. М.: Легеос. – 2005г. – 233с.) The author used the method of comparative analysis for
identifying the ways of translation from the English -source language into the Russian
- target language. . This method applies comparison and confrontation of units
of the source language with the same units of the target language.
THE CONCEPT OF SLANG AND
THE PROBLEM OF ITS TRANSLATION
The
concept of slang includes informal, nonstandard words, phrases , expressions
and meanings that generally live shorter life than the expressions of ordinary
colloquial speech, and typically are formed by creative, often witty juxtapositions
of words or images.
Slang
is related to social dialects. A dialect is a variety of a language
that is characteristic of a particular group of the language's speakers. The
term is applied most often to regional speech patterns, but a dialect may also
be defined by other factors, such as social class. The dialect is always the
opposite of standart language.
Slang
takes a special position among social dialects in the English language.
Different lexical and linguistic phenomena often refer to the notion of slang. So
there are too many different conceptions of slang and the notion of slang is
too wide. But some linguists suggest to refer to slang all voabulary that isn’t
related to Royal English. An interesting fact about the word slang is that it was
originally a slang term for the old French phrase "sale langue",
which translated into English mean "dirty language".
Slang can be contrasted with jargon (technical language of
occupational or other groups) and with argot or cant (secret vocabulary of
underworld groups), but the borderlines separating these categories from slang
are greatly blurred, and some writers use the terms cant, argot, and jargon in
a general way to include all the foregoing meanings.
Slang is vocabulary that is
meant to be interpreted quickly but not necessarily literally, as slang words
or terms are often a metaphor
or an allegory. Slang is
usually very emotionally coloured. With its unusual semantic richness, with its remarkable variety
of associations, with its great emotion-enfluenced power and its comparative
simplicity for understanding slang is an effective method for a person to show
his individuality, to express his thoughts and feelings in different
situations.
Slang
terms are frequently particular to a certain subculture, such as musicians, and members
of minority groups.
Nevertheless, usage of slang expressions can spread outside their original areas
to become commonly used, such as "cool". While some
words eventually lose their status as slang, others continue to be considered
as such by most speakers. In spite of this, the process tends to lead the
original users to replace the words with other, less-recognized terms to
maintain group identity.
One
use of slang is to circumvent social taboos, as mainstream language tends to shy
away from evoking certain realities. For this reason, slang vocabularies are
particularly rich in certain domains, such as sexuality, violence,
crime and drugs. Alternatively,
slang can grow out of mere familiarity with the things described.
Even
within a single language community, slang tends to vary widely across social,
ethnic, economic, and geographic strata. Slang sometimes grows more and more
common until it becomes the dominant way of saying something, at which time it
is regarded as mainstream, acceptable language, while at other times it may
fall into disuse. Numerous slang terms pass into informal mainstream speech,
and sometimes into formal speech, though this may involve a change in meaning
or usage.
Slang
very often involves the creation of novel meanings for existing words. It is
very common for such novel meanings to diverge significantly from the standard
meaning. Thus, "cool" and "hot" can both mean "very
good", "impressive" or "good looking".
Slang
terms are often known only within a clique or ingroup. Another type
of slang, with roots in Internet culture, is texting language (txt
or chatspeak), which is widely used in instant messaging on the Internet (AOL
speak) and mobile phones (SMS language).
There
is the number of the most significant and distinguishing features of slang such
as:
1)
Slang is
a lexical phenomenon.
2)
Slang
cannot belong to the literary language.
3)
Slang is
a layer of vocabulary that is typical for the oral speech.
4)
Slang is
vocabuary that is emotionally coloured.
5)
Slang is
charactirised bycertain familiar or unceremonious connotation.
6)
Slang is
usually included different kinds of humorous, ironical and other expressions.
7)
Slang can
be devided into generally known and widespread slang and slang of a narrow sphere
of usage and known
just to strictly number of people.
8)
Slang
is characterized by the restricted sphere for understanding.
To fully
understand slang, one must remember that a word's use, popularity, and
acceptability can change. Words can change in social level, moving in any direction.
Language is dynamic, and at any given time hundreds, and perhaps thousands, of
words and expressions are in the process of changing from one level to another,
of becoming more acceptable or less acceptable, of becoming more popular or
less popular.
Therefore,
there are a lot of problems concerned the translation of slang. It’s difficult
for a translator or interpreter to choose an appropriate Russian equivalent. In
our country this problem is especially sharp because there is no dictionary of
slang. The issue of the translation norm of slang isn’t brought to a close. The
reason for that might be that there was no tradition of the translation of
slang in the Soviet period because of the censorship. Therefore they lay the
basis for translation of slang only nowadays.
To achieve the
equivalency and adequacy of the translation of slang a translator should take
into consideration the number of aspects which characterize a lexical unit such
as:
1) semantics
2) the sphere of usage
3) the degree of obscenity in
the original language
4) the degree of expressivity
in the concrete language
That’s why according to
Chukovsky a translator should identify the style of an author and his system of
images before beginning the translation. In other words a translator should
choose the appropriate method of translation based on the analysis of stylistic
devices of an author in comparison with possible stylistic devices in the
translation language. Following these rules a translator can convey the degree
of influence closed to that a native speaker experiences while reading an
original text.

Ненормативная
английская лексика to give hell, in hell, bloody hell, hellish передана

CONCLUSION
One could say
that the aim of the work set at the beginning of the research is achieved.
In modern
English there is such tendency towards democratization and lowering of the
standard of the literature language and this reflects in modern English fiction
literature.
During the
research I have examined the whole novel and have chosen 53 cases of the usage
of slang for analysis.
I came to the conclusion
that slang is the most difficult and least studied vocabulary within the theory
of translation. There are no traditions for the translation of the obscene
language in the Russian practice of translation.
At the end of
the work I would like to appreciate the translation of slang in the novel
according to the strong requirements such as:
1.
accuracy
of translation. The translator managed to express all the thoughts and main ideas of the
text. She even managed to express some nuances. She added nothing of her own to
supplement and explain the author of the novel. It is worth while mentioning
that English slang vocabulary in the novel was translated with Russian
equivalent obscene vocabulary. It is necessary to notice that the translator
managed to express all the peculiarities and inflections of English slang. But
nevertheless the translation sometimes is less expressive than the original
text.
2.
compressed
form. The
translator wasn’t too wordy , she managed to choose precise Russian
equivalents for English slang.
3.
clarity
of presentation. The translation is easy for understanding. Equivalents of
slang are very plain and clear for the Russian reader. So each phrase sounds
lively and natural.
All changes of the
original text were necessary to make the translation easy and plain for the
Russian reader.
Having
analyzed the translation of the novel, the author of the term paper considers
it to be quite adequate e, i.e. the translation is as close to the original
as it is possible. But even the greatest masterpieces created by well known
translators yield to originals, because none of the translators can express
all the peculiarities and flavor of the source language. And in this case it
would be appropriate to mention an expression “Nothing is perfect”.
The
translation is very good though it could be better!
